
This summer, Architectural Technology students at George Brown Polytechnic took their skills beyond the studio and into the Canadian National Exhibition. In news published September 4, the polytechnic said that nine current students and one alum are working with the CNE Archives to restore a large-scale model of Toronto’s Crystal Palace. It is more than a convenient practice object. George Brown students originally built the model in 1978 for the CNE’s centennial celebrations. Nearly five decades later, another group of students is caring for it. There is something quietly powerful about that handoff: today’s learners are not just studying the city’s built history; they are helping a previous generation’s work remain visible.
The job involves much more than dusting off an old model. Students assess its condition, document existing pieces, repair damaged components, and use digital modelling, laser scanning and conservation planning to decide what should happen next. They are also speaking with visitors who can watch the restoration in progress. For an international student, an experience like this shows how a technical course can become a real workplace rhythm. Vocabulary has to work in conversation, a team has to make decisions together, and a problem that seems tidy on a drawing becomes far more interesting when actual materials, time and public questions are involved.
George Brown says the project gives students practice in technical work, problem-solving, collaboration and explaining complex ideas to the public. Those are the kinds of experiences that can give a portfolio more texture and make a future professional conversation feel less unfamiliar. The project also links learning with a wider community: the students are restoring a model made by former George Brown students, while helping visitors understand why the city’s architectural heritage matters. In that setting, “hands-on learning” is not a slogan. It becomes a tangible contribution — measured in careful scans, repaired details, shared stories and a model that can keep telling its story.
