Early childhood education is about more than caring for children—it is about understanding how they learn and grow
If you enjoy working with children and want to develop that interest into professional skills, Humber’s two-year Early Childhood Education diploma is worth exploring. The program focuses on the learning and development of children from birth to age 12, helping students build knowledge in child development, observation and documentation, play-based learning, health and safety, and inclusive education.
Learning extends beyond textbooks. Students participate in simulation and practical activities in the Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Lab, the Carol Reid Innovation Centre and Humber’s Child Development Centre. These experiences help students practise creating responsive learning environments that recognize the different abilities, backgrounds and needs of children. The program also examines government legislation, professional ethics, social justice, collaboration with families, and the inclusion of Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing in early childhood practice.
Beginning in the second semester, students complete field experiences where classroom learning is applied in settings such as child-care centres, kindergartens, family programs and community services. International students should consider more than their interest in working with children. English communication, patience, observation skills and readiness to meet placement and professional-registration requirements are also important parts of deciding whether this program is a suitable fit.
