Arriving in Canada can turn ordinary tasks into small adventures: finding a classroom, starting a conversation or working out where to ask a question. In news published on September 4, Conestoga College reported that nearly 2,000 students attended Campus Welcome Day, while 768 joined its virtual Condor Welcome event. For international students exploring an unfamiliar college environment, these activities offer an approachable starting point. Meeting people and discovering campus resources can help a place that initially feels overwhelming become a little easier to navigate. The welcome brings the practical side of settling in into focus alongside the excitement of beginning a new term.
The preparation starts well before the first class. Conestoga’s Start Smart webinars begin months in advance, introducing new students to study expectations and available support. Orientation Week then brings together online and in-person activities, including program orientation sessions, with further activities continuing during Welcome Month. When a student is unsure which service to approach, the Student Success Portal and Ask For Help form provide starting points for finding relevant assistance. That matters when several unfamiliar tasks arrive at once: knowing where to begin can make the next step feel more manageable, rather than leaving every question unanswered until classes are underway.
Once the basics begin to feel familiar, campus life offers room to build connections. Conestoga’s student association, CSI, provides clubs, events and leadership opportunities. The college also plans to share current students’ experiences and advice on Instagram during the early weeks of the term, covering participation, academic progress and everyday campus life. For someone studying abroad, hearing from fellow students can make it easier to picture their own next step. A question asked, a conversation started or an activity joined may be small on its own, but these moments can gradually turn attendance into a sense of belonging.
