A Career Toolkit Between Classes: Humber’s September Career Steps

Humber Polytechnic students in a vibrant career workshop scene

The first few weeks of a new term can be full of ordinary student questions: which classroom is next, how to keep up with readings, and when there will be time to think about work. Humber Polytechnic’s September Career Steps workshop schedule gave that last question a place on the calendar. The series listed sessions on topics including “Empowered by AI: Boost your Employability,” the Career Connect portal, and writing effective résumés and cover letters. Some sessions were specifically marked as recommended for recent graduates, linking the everyday work of job searching with the final stretch of study.

The most useful career preparation is often less dramatic than landing a job offer. It can be opening a résumé and noticing that a classroom project needs a clearer outcome; learning how to turn a part-time role into evidence of teamwork; or discovering that an employer event is easier to approach when questions are prepared in advance. Humber’s Career Connect portal is designed for students and recent graduates seeking full-time and part-time work, work-integrated learning and on-campus jobs. The portal also offers job listings, internship and co-op opportunities, career resources, workshops, employer events and job alerts.

For an international student, this kind of practical routine can make an unfamiliar job market feel more readable. Instead of treating career planning as a single anxious moment after graduation, students can practise small actions while they study: revise a résumé, attend a workshop, search a posting, or book an advising appointment. Humber notes that new students receive Career Connect access two weeks before their first semester, while alumni who graduated after 2018 can use it to search jobs or book alumni career coaching. The point is not a shortcut to employment; it is building a working habit of turning skills, experience and questions into a clearer next step.
